Goosedumps
Me and a coworker couldn't cross the office parking lot without doing some kind of twisting
dance as we tried to avoid stepping on goose poop. There was shit
everywhere, some squashed by tires and unfortunate shoes, mostly
tubular like some sloppy sausage-maker gone berserk. I saw a pile that
must have been six inches high and I remember thinking: was that the
masterpiece of some geese congregation or was that just the work of a
lonesome goose who had one too many dandelion salad.
I do not doubt that their smell permeated the air in subtle ways, still, we were thankful that it was not a full-on olfactory assault.
I've heard that they have pronounced open season for goose hunting in Suffolk county. Too much Canadian geese finding long island real estate ideal that a lot of them relocated here permanently.
I've heard of plastic foxes placed on yards to scare away the geese, I've heard that somebody made a profitable geese-removal business with the help of a few dogs to frighten the boreal birds away. Yup, it seems that a lot more long-islanders are finding them a nuisance.
Despite the open season for these geese, where a hunter is allowed to bag up to eight birds per day, their population does not seem to dwindle. I still encounter just as much bird crossing slowdowns while I drive as before the hunting season.
I'm not one to hunt them down myself. I'm sure, just like us, they are simply enjoying the pretty mild long island weather we are having. Though I have heard stories of goose attacking people, I am fortunate enough not to have experienced an attack myself. In fairness then, I really do not have anything against them - I just wish they would wear diapers.
